Governor Baxter
Shopify ecommerce site
Governor Baxter is a small Maine company hand-crafting rugged outdoor gear and clothing from natural materials and their private stock of recycled WWII military blankets. All the products are made in Maine by local artisans to Governor Baxter’s specs. For instance, the dog bed is stitched by local sailmakers in their off season.
I designed the brand and built the original Governor Baxter website in 2012 using WordPress and Woo Commerce. It still holds up today (see my other portfolio showcase for this original site). But the demands of ecommerce have made it necessary to move the site to the Shopify ecommerce CMS platform. It seemed like a good time to update the brand, as well.
The new site is developed in Shopify with additional functionality provided by third-party apps like Shogun page-builder to expand upon the base theme. Governor Baxter has a limited number of products, so much of the site is about the brand look and feel. Shopify is focused on product display and so is less equipped for that kind of branding. That’s where the third-party apps come in. Shopify is a constant tug-of-war between what the platform allows and what you want to achieve. There is usually a solution if you’re willing to dig deep enough.
The new site is currently in Shopify staging. Links coming soon.
